The original fireplace was a very simple thing – a large opening underneath a chimney!
A fire would be lit on the floor and smoke would (sometimes) drift up the chimney.
But when the first coal was found on beaches, it was discovered that a draught from below was required for it to burn properly. So people of the time made a pair of supports from wrought iron and placed bars between these supports – in effect, creating the first ever firedog and basket.
Decorative elements were added to the original firedogs. The most popular was to model the pair of supports on the shape of the Master’s best friend – his dog! And the name ‘firedog’ has been with us ever since.
Then when it was found that adding a large iron plate at the back of the firedog and basket projected more heat into the room, the fire back and dog basket had been invented.
